Edward Hopper's visual impact / L'impact visuel par Edward Hopper

A few months ago, I wrote about one of my favourite masters of realism : Edward Hopper (post in French only). My first article introduced the artist and some of his works. Today, I wish to place the emphasis on the visual impact of his paintings. The way the painter arranged each element of his works wasn't an accident but the result of a long meditation process, numerous sketches and studies, ... in order to obtain a strong composition. E. Hopper's wife, Josephine, collected a lot of records of his works in progress. These have... [Lire la suite]

Daylight - Professional Artist Lamp

It is a truth universally aknowledged, that to create your best art, you will need the best light. Inadequate light could distort the final result of your work. Indeed, a classical lighting could visually modify the shades and, at the same time, influence the way you mix the colours. This professional artist lamp allows you to work at anytime of the day or night. It is portable and supplied with two clamps in order to be moved from your easel to a drawing table within minutes. The light source is a 18-watt low heat that provides a... [Lire la suite]

Meet Maxim / A la Rencontre de Maxim

Maxim. Pastel sur Mi-Teintes Canson / Pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes drawing paper. 20 x 30 cm. 1999. Collection privée / Private collection. Here is one of my earlier pastel portraits, using the Conté Sketching Crayons. These crayons give accurate strokes when the edges of the sticks are used, and flat areas when the artist works with the flat of the crayon. The Conté Sketching Crayons are manufactured using natural pigments (iron oxides, carbon black, titanium dioxide), clay (kaolin) and a binder (cellulose ether). These pastels are... [Lire la suite]

Dalí Universe & Teatre Museu

London's most surrealist experience lies in a labyrinth of dreamlike corridors in the heart of South Bank ... It is named the "Dalí Universe" and was launched in 2000. A wonderful collection of Dalí sculptures dating from 1935-1984 are on exhibit, among over 500 art works. I must say that, to me, these sculptures are the most beautiful part of the exhibition. But if you like the artist, you will also appreciate his drawings, lithographs, gold and glass objects and a Dalí-inspired furniture collection. The exhibition... [Lire la suite]

Making soft pastels / Fabriquer ses pastels secs

Making soft pastels requires a lot of time but it is an excellent way to create, by yourself, the accurate colour and softness that you want and that you have not been able to find in art shops. It also allows you to custom the size of the sitcks to your hand and your work. And, an important point, it is quite cheaper ! Fabriquer des pastels secs demande beaucoup de temps mais c'est un excellent moyen de créer, par vous-même, des pastels de la couleur et la dureté exactes que vous souhaitez obtenir et n'avez pas réussi à trouver... George's Dragon (Brighton Royal Pavilion)

Original article : 28th October 2007. Update : 5th December 2007. SERIE : The United Kingdom in drawings / Le Royaume-Uni en dessins. Here is the first drawing of a new serie. A lot of people often ask me why I like the United Kingdom so much. Well, they don't know what they are missing ... The people, the atmosphere, the arts and entertainments, the English Litterature of the 19th century, the breathtaking landscapes, ... are particular, like anywhere else in the world. A lot of hidden (or apparent) treasures are simply there,... [Lire la suite]
